Dante Property Services was conceived in Oxfordshire in 2005. The business has grown to what it is today, gradually, by Terence’s good reputation and the word of mouth of happy clients.
Terence Coughlin, the owner of the business, relocated with his wife and two children to Devon some 7 years ago in search of a better quality of life for himself and his family.
They found the perfect spot in Hatherleigh, the smallest town in Devon. A very beautiful part of the country and much closer to the coast than landlocked Oxfordshire.
The name of the business Dante came from an amalgamation of husband and wife christian names – Daniella & Terence.
Terence bought a plot of land and then designed and built a brand new property in the middle of the ancient town. It is a real testament to his talent that it sits so comfortably admidst older properties. Unlike the many historic properties in the area, Terence’s house requires very little heating due to the materials, the construction and the clever use of technology for free heating through both passive solar as well as solar heating panels linked into a highly efficient heat store.
Renovation Of Period Property – Dante’s Forte!
Dante specialise in period properties. They supply and fit bespoke and off the peg joinery, kitchens and bathrooms. They lay all types of hard flooring including slate, terracotta, marble, limestone, tiled, oak, pine, maple, elm etc. Dante can also renovate old floors, sanding boards and cleaning and re-grouting all types of stone.
Terence loves nothing more than getting his hands on a kitchen or bathroom that needs modernisation or a re-design and re-fit. He can take a kitchen or bathroom that is impractical or poorly conceived and turn it into something that is a joy to behold and a pleasure to use. This is what Dante do best.
Terence is more than happy to spend time with customers to discuss the finer points of design or to suggest alternative ideas to suit the client. Otherwise, he is quiet happy to shut up and do as he is told for clients that have a clear idea of what they want!
Dante’s client base is primarily couples/families coming in to the area from other parts of the country. The ideal customer is someone who has a property with potential. People who know what they want but who do not necessarily know where to source local materials and quality craftspeople.
When Terence was asked how he would like to improve his business, he replied
Improvement is not a “one off” thing. I improve my business on a daily basis and on many different levels. I would like to expand the business, to bring on new ‘apprentices’ but I would need a steady flow of new business to do this
Quality Materials From The West Country
Dante source their products mainly from Devon. They try to use small businesses supplying unique and high quality building materials. Dante take these materials and, combined with the vision of their clients, try to make traditional, functional, but above all individually beautiful homes.
Due to the nature of the client base Dante tend to find themselves working in period properties with traditional materials.
Over the years they have become proficient in sourcing and installing a variety of premium products from a variety of proven suppliers. Cost to the client is always foremost in Terence’s mind and he can generally suggest alternative materials/suppliers when budgets are tight.
Ultimately, Dante trade on their reputation for quality, design input and most importantly communication with the client. Terence says, “Getting these right is what keeps us in business.”
